It is not uncommon for us to receive inquiries with a drawing for a metallic component attached. The order and the wishes of the customers are to manufacture a ceramic component of the same type.
The motivation is quickly understood: a special application (e.g. contact with corrosive media) overwhelms the normally sufficient material properties of metals. The ceramic is supposed to solve the problem, of course without driving up the system costs.
Often, however, these high expectations cannot be met, because the other properties of oxide ceramic materials also require different construction principles.
Is designing with ceramics a problem?
Certainly not when you consider some of the basic properties of these materials.
In general, ceramics have different mechanical, chemical, electrical and optical properties than metals. This results in desirable properties, but also those that are generally seen as a hindrance to the construction of components.
