We often receive inquiries, with a drawing for a metallic component attached. The order and the wishes of the customers are to produce a similar ceramic component.
The motivation is quickly understood: a special application (e.g. contact with corrosive media) overwhelms the normally sufficient material properties of metals. The ceramics are supposed to solve the problem, of course without increasing the system costs.
Often, however, these high expectations cannot be met, because the other properties of oxide ceramic materials also require other design principles.
Is designing with ceramics a problem?
Certainly not if you take into account some basic properties of these materials.
In general, ceramics have different mechanical, chemical, electrical and optical properties than metals. This results in desirable properties, but also those that are generally regarded as a hindrance to the construction of components.
